Peru Trip
Tim and I decided last fall that we wanted to take an "adventurous" vacation in the spring. So after raiding REI, we headed to Peru the 1st of March to fulfill Tim's long-time dream of hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. We flew overnight from Miami to Lima, where we were picked up by our travel group and driven to the neighborhood of Miraflores. My first impression of Lima, to be completely honest, was that it is a dirty city...and it smells bad too! The air is polluted by stinky vehicle emissions. After we settled into our hotel, we went for a stroll around the neighborhood. Turns out, it is actually a very nice and pretty area of Lima. Later, we took a cab to an artsy neighborhood, Barranco, for dinner. We had a very tasty meal, ceviche, as we took in the beautiful view of the sun setting over the Pacific.
The next day we boarded a plane for an hour flight to Cusco. Cusco is 11,000ft above sea level and therefore, has very thin air. We were told not to do anything too active the first couple days so that we could acclimate to our surroundings. Luckily, neither one of us experienced any altitude sickness the whole trip! We spent two days in Cusco taking in the sights and visiting the local ruins. We even did a little rafting on the Urubamba River.
Finally, it was time to tackle the Inca Trail. They eased us in the first day of the trip by limiting our trek to only four hours of hiking. Although it was only a half day, we definitely got in a workout. The dreaded second day definitely lived up to its reputation. We spent six hours going straight up (as high as 13,775ft) followed by two hours straight down! The third day had a lot of little ups and downs, but we paused often to take in the scenery which helped break up the day. The excitement of completing our mission and the anticipation of reaching our destination, made the fourth day a breese. We were up at 4am to make sure that we reached Machu Picchu nice and early and before the hoard of "train" tourists arrived.
Machu Picchu is absolutely breath-taking. It has a mystical ora about it and is just plain fascinating. To our surprise, the tour guide informed us that the city is only 70% uncovered. That means there is still a lot more of this spactacular city yet to be discovered!
